1. The Service
GIScases is an educational tool that lets an instructor build and assign GIS (geographic information system) exercises — spatial-analysis “cases” based on satellite imagery and map layers — and review learner answers. Because you can pick any area on Earth and freely configure the conditions of a case, the Service is extremely versatile: it lets you create unique, non-repeating assignments. Although it is well suited to school geography teaching, it is not limited to geography teachers or schools: it is equally useful for higher-education institutions, universities, and private courses and trainers teaching spatial analysis. Spatial analysis is applied not only in the earth sciences but also in fields such as marketing, economics, urban and regional planning, logistics, investment and site-selection planning, and beyond — and the Service may be used to teach these applications.
The Service is intended for teaching and learning. It is not a professional surveying, navigation, planning, or emergency-response tool, and must not be relied upon for any operational, safety-critical, commercial-decision, or legal purpose.
The exercises are recommended for learners aged 12 and over solely because of their conceptual difficulty (they involve distance reasoning, map interpretation, and spatial analysis). This is a guideline about complexity, not a content warning: the Service does not present any violent, sexual, mature, or otherwise age-inappropriate material, and does not knowingly include sensitive personal information. The recommended age is a suggestion for suitability, and the teacher remains responsible for deciding whether a given exercise is appropriate for their class.
The idea behind GIScases is to show today’s students what modern geographic science actually does. Its strength is not only that the cases are engaging: they are designed so that they cannot be solved simply by asking an AI chatbot such as ChatGPT — a student has to carry out the spatial reasoning themselves. The applied skills they build are genuinely useful for the future, because spatial analysis has a very broad field of application across many industries.
2. Eligibility & accounts
The Service is intended for teachers, lecturers, trainers, and educational institutions of any level — from schools to universities to private courses. In these Terms, “teacher” (also shown as “creator” in parts of the app) means any authorised instructor or account holder, and “student” means any learner they assign work to. You must be at least 18 years old (or the age of majority in your jurisdiction) and legally able to enter into these Terms. Teacher accounts are created through single sign-on (e.g. a Microsoft/Azure AD identity via Cloudflare Access). You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your login and for all activity under your account.
There are no student accounts. Students do not register, log in, or create profiles. A student accesses an assigned exercise only through a unique link provided by their teacher.
3. Teacher responsibilities & student data
If you are a teacher or institution using the Service to assign work to students, you acknowledge and agree that:
- You act as the data controller for any student information you enter (a student’s name and email address, used solely to deliver a task link) and for the student answers returned to you. Solebo acts as a data processor that provides the tool on your behalf. See our Privacy Policy.
- You are responsible for having a valid legal basis — including any consent, notice, or school/parental authorisation required by applicable law (such as the GDPR and local education and child-protection rules) — before entering a student’s details or sending them a task.
- You will enter accurate information, use the Service only for legitimate educational purposes, and not upload or transmit any sensitive personal data about students beyond the name and email needed to deliver a task.
- You are responsible for the content and conduct of the classes and tasks you create.
Institutions requiring a data processing agreement (DPA) may request one at the contact address below.
4. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- use the Service in violation of any law or third-party right, or for any purpose that is harmful, deceptive, or infringing;
- upload malware, attempt to gain unauthorised access, probe or breach security, or disrupt the Service;
- scrape, bulk-download, resell, or systematically extract data, imagery, or map tiles from the Service;
- reverse engineer, decompile, or attempt to derive source code, except where such restriction is prohibited by law;
- misrepresent your identity or authority, or use the Service to collect data about individuals without a lawful basis;
- exceed reasonable usage or circumvent plan limits, rate limits, or access controls.
5. Subscriptions, billing & refunds
The Service offers a free plan and paid plans:
- Free plan — provided free of charge. It gives access to a limited number of the built-in cases and does not include creating your own custom cases or editing/adjusting the map layers of a task. In every other respect it is fully functional: you can assign tasks, have students solve them, and review and score answers. This lets you try the Service in full and even use it for occasional individual assignments at no cost. Free features and limits may change over time.
- Individual Pro is an academic-year licence for a single teacher, paid by card via our payment processor. It is a one-time payment for the licence period and does not auto-renew. Access runs until 31 August of the following calendar year, so a licence always covers at least a full academic year — and more if you buy it partway through the year. You will not be charged again automatically.
- Corporate Pro is licensed per institution and billed by invoice from Solebo Ltd. Its terms — scope, pricing, and duration — are determined on request for each institution. Like Individual Pro, it runs to at least 31 August of the following calendar year and does not auto-renew.
When a paid plan ends, your data is not deleted. Your cases, tasks, classes, and student answers remain in your account. However, while a paid plan is inactive, use of features and content beyond the Free plan is paused (for example, creating custom cases, editing task layers, and anything above the Free-plan limits). As soon as you renew, full access to your existing data is restored.
The Service also lets you print an exercise as a layered PDF, so GIS can be taught “analog” — hands-on and without a computer. Some sheets are designed to be printed on transparent plastic film so they can be overlaid in register. This printing feature is available to all users, including on the Free plan. Printing, film, and any materials are your responsibility.
Prices are shown on our pricing page and may change for future purchases. You are responsible for any applicable taxes unless stated otherwise. Because access is granted immediately and for a fixed academic period, fees are generally non-refundable except where required by applicable consumer law. If you believe you were charged in error, contact us and we will review the matter in good faith.
If you have any questions or run into any difficulty with a plan, billing, or your access, you can always contact us at [email protected] and we will help resolve it promptly.
6. Intellectual property & map data
The Service, including its software, design, text, and lesson content, is owned by Solebo Ltd or its licensors and is protected by intellectual-property laws. We grant you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to use the Service for its intended educational purpose during your subscription. All rights not expressly granted are reserved.
The Service displays third-party geographic data under their respective licences, including satellite imagery © Esri, Maxar, Earthstar Geographics and map data © OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL). Your use of that data is subject to those providers’ terms. Cases and rosters you create remain yours; you grant us a limited licence to host and process them solely to operate the Service for you.
7. Third-party services
The Service relies on third-party providers, including Cloudflare (hosting, database, and access management), a card payment processor, an email delivery provider, and map/imagery providers. Your use of the Service may be subject to those providers’ terms, and we are not responsible for their acts or omissions.
8. Disclaimers
Map imagery and OpenStreetMap layers are community-sourced or third-party data and may be incomplete, outdated, or inaccurate. Buffer zones, overlaps, scores, and other outputs are indicative teaching aids only. We do not warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or secure, or that results are correct. You must not use the Service or its outputs for navigation, surveying, engineering, legal, emergency, or any real-world decision-making.
GIScases is designed for training and conceptual exercises. Although its cases are built on real cartographic data, it is not a tool for real-world planning. For this reason we deliberately do not provide precise real-world coordinates or exportable geospatial data for direct professional use, and we make no representation as to the quality, accuracy, or completeness of the underlying geodata. Anyone needing reliable spatial data for professional purposes should obtain it from an authoritative source.
9. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Solebo Ltd and its officers, employees, and suppliers will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for any loss of profits, data, goodwill, or opportunity, arising out of or relating to the Service, even if advised of the possibility. To the extent liability cannot be excluded, our total aggregate liability for all claims relating to the Service is limited to the greater of (a) the amount you paid us for the Service in the 12 months before the event giving rise to the claim, or (b) €100. Nothing in these Terms excludes liability that cannot be excluded by law (such as for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud).
10. Indemnity
You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Solebo Ltd from any claims, damages, liabilities, and expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising from your use of the Service, your content or rosters, your handling of student data, or your breach of these Terms or of any law or third-party right.
11. Suspension & termination
You may stop using the Service at any time. We may suspend or terminate access if you breach these Terms, if required by law, or to protect the Service or other users. On termination, your right to use the Service ends; provisions that by their nature should survive (including intellectual property, disclaimers, liability, and governing law) will survive.
12. Changes to the Service or Terms
We may modify or discontinue features of the Service, and we may update these Terms from time to time. If we make material changes, we will update the “Last updated” date and, where appropriate, provide notice. Your continued use after changes take effect constitutes acceptance.
13. Governing law & disputes
These Terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of Cyprus, without regard to conflict-of-laws rules. The courts of Cyprus have exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute, subject to any mandatory consumer-protection rights you may have in your country of residence.
